Project name: Twin Creeks
Project location: St. George, Utah
Square footage: 4,593
Total project cost: $1.9 million
The scope of this project called Twin Creeks was to design a custom minimalist Southwest contemporary home for a local affluent developer/builder. The client was a bachelor who enjoys entertaining, and has a passion for cars, boats and gadgets, requiring space for each. The objective for Ence Homes in St. George, Utah, was to give the client the space required and the amenities asked for on a tight time frame and a site restricted by shape, location and geology.
Twin Creeks posed a few design challenges with expansive shale and clay for its footing base. Water from the creek and golf course behind created concerns. Ence Homes also faced the challenge of maximizing multiple views of mountain vistas, a golf course fairway and hole location in addition to the southern Utah sun.
To address the poor soil conditions, Ence Homes designed a structural reinforced floating slab to commercial spec. The landscape design incorporated a perimeter subsurface drainage system with French and drain tiles sloped to a collection area. The eco-friendly softscape included drought-tolerant vegetation and minimal grass area. The builder used synthetic grass on the putting green and surrounding fringe to help with the water/soil problem.
